Crowd Surfing, Moshpits, 'As It Is' at rock concerts!

The bitterness of a cool breeze invested itself in the extensive line of fans waiting to head into the o2 Ritz, Manchester. I among them. A rather helpful security woman, directed me to the VIP line. VIP...A word that when it came to concerts I was familiar with, but never experienced until tonight. There were no expectations, simply just swarms of excitement and a lot of fangirl moments. As It Is, playing Manchester Ritz. One of the biggest shows on tour, fans were told. Just mere days earlier, the band had switched up their set, for the remaining 3 UK shows they have left on this tour.

Stood outside the venue, eager for the warmth that I knew was awaiting, nostalgia washed over me. The nostalgia of seeing As It Is perform on stage, the overwhelming joy and happiness from seeing them perform, from being in the atmosphere but also being at one of their concerts. I'd worked out that I have been a fan of As It Is for 6 years, and that is one hell of a long time. In fact, that is how long the band have been together, forming back in 2012; so to have seen them grow and to have this new era it is something quite magical.

Close to 5pm, and VIP had finally been let into the venue, of course by this point I was just happy to be warm. We walked into a large room, where (as obvious as it may be) the gig was taking place, to be greeted by the remaining soundcheck of Holding Absence. They sounded pretty great, so I was then excited. They are a band that I had heard of, but never listened to. Then once the Holding Absence guys got off stage, the lovely Claire got on stage to talk to us about what was going to happen.

Soundcheck. 3 songs that were not going to be in the set. 3 songs that I love. Definitely can't complain that the last of the 3 songs was Patchwork Love. A tune, that most of the fanbase can happily get behind. When they sang speak soft, they had to start over again because of technical issues...it was an authentic soundcheck they stated, because that is what soundcheck is usually like for them.

Photo Op. Something that I am familiar with when it comes to concerts, because it essentially runs the way a meet and greet works, stand in line, eventually get your turn to meet the band, hug them, speak to them, scream internally or maybe even externally if you've managed to pass the amount of overwhelming feeling inside. Then when you've finally met the band that you never thought you would ever meet, you go ahead and make your way back up to the stage where your place at the barrier is waiting. Right at the front, stage left was where I was parked and you could definitely bet that there was no chance I was leaving. To have moved me, you probably would have to of had security carry me out, because there was no way on any planet nevermind earth that I was moving.

Holding Absence then came back on stage to finish off soundcheck, shortly followed by Courage My Love. A band whom, I both knew of and heard music by. And let me make this as clear as humanly possible. They did not disappoint! I never go to gigs with an expectation to like a support act or to even become a fan but I was already a fan of Courage My Love and to have seen them perform, set the night off to the grandest of starts.

7:15pm, Courage My Love, a 3 piece Rock band from Ontario, Canada. The trio, twin sisters; Mercedes Arn-Horn (Lead Vocals), Phoenix Arn-Horn (Drummer) and Brandon Lockwood (Bassist). They were the first opening act, with a half hour set of all original songs, energetic and wild. Before they started playing on stage, to the left of the stage Mercedes was jumping around to warm up, and brought that energy straight to the stage.

Now, I am not one to moan about support acts much less audience members, but I also don't appreciate the girls that stood right next to me not even paying attention to the band. It was rude and quite frankly if I wasn't enjoying my time, or the music and being respectful of others then I would happily have spoken to those girls and spoke my damn mind...however they couldn't have been any older than 16 which explained a lot. Courage My Love were a memorable act, and one that I would see on a headline tour. Additionally they played my favourite song off their new album, "Remission" so that made me even happier than I already was in that very moment.

Then things got heavier. 8pm,,,or the set of Holding Absence? I was incredibly excited to see the girls around me's reactions because if they hadn't liked Courage My Love they'd more than likely dislike these guys more. Pleasantly I was surprised that atleast 1 of the 3 gave them a chance.

Holding Absence, a 5 piece Rock band from Cardiff, UK. James Joseph (Bassist), Ashley Green (Drummer), Lucas Woodland (Lead Vocals), Scott Carey (Guitarist) and Chris Smitheram (Guitarist). These guys and their energy, it was contagious. From Woodland and his air kicks to Green and his attention grabbing beats. Every single one of these guys showed Manchester all they had, and it was a lot of fun being a non fan of theirs because I got first hand experience into what being a fan of theirs looks like. Holding Absence are going to be a band that, you are going to see more and more often, it was an honor being in the crowd of fans stood at the front who knew every lyric. It meant so much to the band as well, as Woodland pointed out that he recognised a few friendly faces, from smaller shows they'd played before.

If there's one thing in rock concerts I don't understand, it is crowd surfing. Each to their own, I don't have a problem with it, until it gets dangerous. To the drunken guy last night that started off the crowd surfing, you go boy! I'm happy you are having the time of your life, but at the same time I felt incredibly sorry for the hard working security trying to ensure the safety of everyone. Especially the drunken crowd surfing fans, they were done with all that bullshit half way through the 3rd and final support act, and quite frankly I don't blame them. However from crowd surfing to moshpits, this night was one that can only be given justice to, if you were lucky enough to be there and witness it.

Now, if I thought that the crowd surfing and moshpits were crazy during the set of Holding Absence, I was sorely mistaken by the time 8:45pm rolled round. Trash Boat. A 5 piece pop punk/post hardcore band from St. Albans, UK. Tobi Duncan (Lead Vocals), Dann Bostock (Guitarist), Ryan Hyslop (Lead Guitarist), James Grayson (Bassist) and Oakley Moffatt (Drummer), to say they raised the room, would be an understatement. It was clear that there were a lot of fans there to see Trash Boat as well as, As It Is which was moving to see the band getting recognition for their work. Like the other support acts, there were people bouncing around, bopping heads, head banging insatiably, starting massive moshpits and having the time of their teenage lives. For me, Trash Boat were a great final support act before As It Is came on because they got people moving and (EXCITED) for As It Is. With a wild filled set, by the time Trash Boat left stage I was more than ready for As It Is.

As It Is. Patty Walters (Lead Vocals), Ben Langford-Biss (Guitarist/Vocals), Alistair Testo (Bassist), Patrick Foley (Drummer), Ronnie Ish (Guitarist). 9:45pm, was my extreme favourite time of the night. Apart from early that night when I got to meet these guys! Externally screaming for minutes, days, months, even years after. The atmosphere in the room was phenomenal. I really didn't care that I was basically kissing the barrier, or that I barely had proper movement, because I was in an experience that was magical. Although Foley is part of As It Is, could you tell that on stage? Not really, this tour he was further back and higher up. In soundcheck he joked that it was because he didn't want to be too close to the other members, of As It Is. The entire show, he was hidden behind clouds of smoke, so stayed pretty much in the background. However, you could feel the emotion everywhere you turned, playing a series of bopping tunes amongst some of my favourites like 'Dial Tones', 'No Way Out', 'The Fire, The Dark' and more. I never dislike any songs within sets, but the atmosphere changed my entire night. From the people crowd surfing, to the people in the moshpits, to me, one of the lucky few right at the barrier close enough to touch the band if they lent over. Everyone was bouncing, head banging, crying but over all having fun. Even the parents in the crowd. I've been to that many gigs where I have screamed to the point of exhaustion in my voice, I would without a doubt say that my night would have been totally worth a hurting voice but much to my surprise, I didn't have a sore throat at all. Through every lyric in every song I sung, to the mass amount of girly screaming the only thing I was in desperate need for was water. Some nice, ice cold refreshing water.

One thing I found the most moving about the entire set, was Walters went up t each of his band mates during the course of the show saying "I fucking love you". The love and the relationship that this band have, is undeniable and very resonating with the audience. They feel like a family, and with the fans it feels like a community. A sense of belonging; where it is ok to who you are and be individual. It is ok to be a goth, or an emo, or be gay or transgender. Everyone is equal, and the band couldn't stress that enough.

As It Is, did not disappoint one bit! Even watching Ronnie (Guitarist) on stage was a dream come true, he may not have had a microphone but he really didn't care. Their entire set from start to finish was energetic, mesmorising and overall one highly extraordinary night. I want to relive that night over and over again because being in that room, for those 5 hours of my night was the best way to end my gigs for 2018.

Bands to watch out for, Courage My Love and Holding Absence. These 2 bands are going to make it big within the next few months, I am more than sure of that. If you are into Rock then I couldn't recommend any 3 bands more, than these 3 supporting acts.

As for As It Is, if you're not already a fan then you are missing out on 5 very talented men who have a story to tell.

Whales, moshpits, memories and a bit of groovy disco...

In the city life, you don't wake up to chirping birds or to look outside your frosty window to see fields of green, dusted in ice. In the city life, if one isn't woken up to the sound of cars passing or to sirens echoing through the streets, then there's the biggest chance that you are woken by a noise of sorts. To look out the window and see a large concrete jungle of buildings, is both successful feeling and an odd sense of belonging.

Stepping outside to be attacked by the raw, vastly bitter, cold air that is winter welcoming you into it's arms. My day seemingly planned out. University lecture, food shop... For those who unfortunately have to live the adult life that yes, you probably guessed, or maybe know from experience really sucks! However to end my night, I was going to a gig. A concert that had been hyped up for more than a week. The lead up to the night was exciting, and excruciating pain both at the same time. I was going to support my friend, who as you could imagine was highly exciting to be getting on to a stage in Manchester and play for the first time in months to an audience. Yet painfully so leading up to this night, because there is a stage in which you get yourself very pumped up for the gig and then it flashes by in the blink of an eye. The only unfortunate, evil feeling that one can feel about gigs, if you are a gig goer and a gig lover, like myself.

So, like any other rational person I lived out my Monday partially as planned. Leaving my cozy room, and flat on Lower Ground of an 8 story building, casually walking out into the bitter breeze that I had highly prepared myself for, I begun my route to University. Now BIMM, to the outer eye is far from anything special. Hell, it is the underdog of all the universities in Manchester. You look at information on all Manchester universities, you can bet you won't find this private sector. In fact I am almost certain. But to the people inside BIMM, when you let go of the fees, and really delve deep into it, it is a home. Sure, we aren't as fancy as those redbrick educational universities...and frankly probably not as academic but one thing is for sure, that in BIMM, you network. Musicianship students, Business students, Events Management students, and of-course my favourite because it is my course, the Journalism students. Not going to lie to you, music journalism students are the bottom of the hierarchy but arguably out of the lot, we underdogs surprise those ego driven musicians who think they are the dogs bollocks when in actual fact, every person is equal. Do I personally give a shit that you can play a "killer" riff on your fender guitar...no. For 1...the fact you own a fender guitar, really doesn't impress me, most guitarists in the industry do because it's sound, amongst other reasons; and 2...I can name atleast 5 other people out of my friends alone that can. BIMM is full of networking, but it is also family. It's community. No matter who you are, or what you look like you serve a purpose, and to be part of it, in itself is a success that no one will ever take away.

Strolling into a naturally lit reception building, drenched in orange, black and white, I make my way up to the first floor where my lecture room is; to walk into a room that was sweaty and (drenched) in heat. Why do the musicians in that room stink? They hadn't even been playing, yet you could smell the odor and the musky scent of them. To say they like the heat, might just be an understatement. On a Monday afternoon, I certainly do not look forward to that (sweaty) encounter. One hour and a half later, and a lot of laughs over watching my lecturer try to remove permanent marker from the whiteboard, it was time for adulting. Food shopping. I'm not going to bore you with that trip, but I did buy a rather delicious ciabatta roll that had chicken and stuffing filling. A well deserved lunch.

7pm rolls around and to Night People we roamed. Passing the rock aesthetic that would make any hip hop 'gangsta'esque person bleed from ear to ear, Satan's Hollow. The holy grail for any Rock n' Roll night. And finally Night People. Not much from the outside, until you're met with a dozen stairs down into the basement where the magic happens. 10 minutes went by, and I made it to the guy behind the desk. A friendly face, to talk to. He drew a small 'X' on my right hand, asked if I had a flyer for a free shot...and bam. Ready. Now, I am that person who has an undeniable love for a double vodka and coke but the shot of vodka I had, needless to say I was not a fan. That shit, burned for 10 minutes but at least I was gig ready with a free shot in my system. I walked under the arch into a room playing disco tunes, to be greeted with a warm hug from a friendly face. Daniel (Dan) Wright (Drummer of Orca). The friend that had invited me to his first gig in Manchester and the one that was as excited as a child on Christmas day at 6am when they found out that Santa left them presents to open. But to have an energy like his in my life, makes a refreshing change. Now I knew how talented he was, but damn...some of the audience members were in for a treat. Standing grooving to some undeniably good disco tunes, surrounded by my friends, I was ready for the night to begin.

"BIMM Presents" written in bold block letters on a light board behind the bar, to the right of me. The first act, Anya. An illusion of a woman I had heard so much about, but never had the honor of meeting or even hearing until tonight. It was Anya's first time playing in Manchester, but would you have known if she hadn't told us? No. In fact, the audience responded to her, rather well considering she was the first act, which I can only imagine must be more nerve racking as the first act sets the pace for what is to come. Apart from the small crowd of people, somewhere behind me talking through her set, which frankly a little rude to do so when Anya was only playing mostly acoustic she did not disappoint. A fresh voice, with a husky twang, and a large set of lungs on her that's for sure. Out of her entire set, it had to have been my favourite song of hers, purely for the fact she had a band behind her, I loved the acoustic set she had, but she really suited the band vibes. Joe Berry (Guitarist) and Charlie Morris (Drummer), 2 members of the audience politely asked if they would join her on stage. In the semi crowded room, everyone knew everyone. Or at least knew of each other.

When your friends get pulled up on stage to play spontaneously, you kind of have to become less distracted by the talking and drown out the people that weren't invested in the set. For two guys, who had no clue they were going to be dragged up on stage, they did a very exceptional job. The audience loved it!

8:15pm cruised by and the band that evidentally, almost everyone came to see, began to play. Orca. Harry Bathie (Guitarist/Lead Vocals), Ben Stott (Bass) and Daniel (Dan) Wright (Drums). 3 extremely talented guys, that form a band who's sound can only be described as being similar to Radiohead and Tame Impala. Stage presence. Stage presence for me, is something that either brings the overall performance of a band up, or sadly down. For these guys, stage presence was definitely not an issue! Ben, was highly energetic with the crowd and because of the communication between the crowd and the band, the atmosphere in the room changed drastically. The crowd instead of standing 1/3 of the space away from the stage, like we had in the beginning; had rushed to be as close to the stage as possible. You could feel the imaginary barriers between the small stage and the crowd, that is how close the crowd were. If it weren't for the photographers, like Ryan Trevalyn Osborne and Piran Aston the crowd would have basically been on stage with them. The crowds reaction to Ben saying he wants to see movement...create a circle and begin a moshpit. Moshpits. I don't have a problem with them whatsoever. Would I join one? Hell no. Do I enjoy being the barrier for one? That unfortunately is also a no. Was it funny and fun to watch? Definitely! It is always fun, seeing people enjoy themselves and to see the audience react the way they did, is arguably one of the most rewarding things to be part of when going to a gig.

Orca's set. The half hour set, consisted of all original songs. Enjoyable. Dancey. But most importantly you could see the guys shine on stage. They were enjoying what they were doing, what they were playing and they were getting into the songs, the way musicians should. Movement, you'd expect on a small stage like the one they were on, it would be limited but, there was not a single moment that I looked over at Ben and he wasn't dancing or Harry where he also wasn't dancing. If you ask me, I think they were trying to see who could dance better with their instrumental partners. Sorry Harry, but Ben wins. Dan...definitely not forgetting Dan. The drummer, who evokes all his passion into hitting the drums. Watching his reaction when he hit his symbol, and watching it swing, was a memory for the books. Go hard or go home, should be Dan's motto because when he sits behind that drum kit, he gives it all he's got and then some.

If I had to pin point some of my favourite memories of their set, picking only 3. In order of the events happening my first, would be watching Ben almost knock Dan out with the head of his bass before the set began, because who doesn't love watching that. The second would be Dan pulling faces every time he hit the symbols harder than anticipated and the last. The last is one to be remembered forever at the first gig of Orca. Ben jumping off stage, into the circle the crowd created to do a big finisher and slipping as his feet met the ground. To say that the crowd were pumped, would be a large understatement.

As the guys, got off stage a swarm of people rushing to congratulate them on their set. I only managed to catch Dan as he got off stage, but he was one extremely grateful, adrenaline induced drummer who looked like he enjoyed every second of being up on that stage. As a journalist, who knows what it feels like to be on stage in front of a crowd, I don't know how they do it, but there wasn't a single frowned face that I could see.

Unfortunately my night ended there, I did not manage to see the final 2 acts that were up on stage but if the first 2 were any indication, they would have surely smashed that stage.

What can be expected from Orca in the future? A little birdy announced last night that there is a new track, next year to be released which is always exciting. From the band themselves, I think that we will be hearing a lot more from them in the future. A trio, that fit well and who give it everything they have. If BIMM was to have an up and coming band, I would highly say that these guys were one!

A short explanation to my thoughts of Orca. As a band; devoted, driven and highly enjoyable. As 3 individuals, talented, motivated and vastly driven. A band to look out for, in the future, and a trio who played one audience pleasing first show.

TRACK OF THE WEEK - "Just Like A Pill" by P!nk

Metaphorical pills, contagious drum beats, a massive sense of resonating nostalgia and of-course the main ingredient...PINK (Stylised at P!NK).

P!nk (born as Alecia Beth Moore), American RnB/Pop Rock singer, songwriter, dancer and actress known for hits like "Get The Party Started", "Don't Let Me Get Me","Just Like A Pill" and "So What".  Her discography consisting of 7 albums, and more impressively Pink has sold over 42 million albums and 75 million singles worldwide. In America alone she has sold over 16 million albums.

Is Pink still relevant? Making her start actively in the industry in 1995, it is apparent that by the number of records she sells and how wide spread her music is, that indeed she is still relevant even in 2018. Even with albums like 'M!ssundaztood' which was released in 2001, her music is still vital in today's society because of how much of an influence she is to her audience, and to her daughter Willow Sage Hart.

'Just Like A Pill' a relatively moderate paced song with a major scale is a throwback track for sure. With a attention grabbing instrumental introduction, and a fading out end it is everything in between that makes the song. The strong sense of symbols, kicking in, as the song leads up to the chorus, which keeps the beat catchy and dancey. "I think I took too much"  from this song, as dancey and enjoyable as it is it also has the obvious metaphor of pills being taken however, Pink has used them as a way of describing her boyfriend at that current time. The relationship went sour, and she used the metaphor to signify how she felt; making the main theme of the song about a painful relationship and the sub theme about drug abuse as, it almost romanticises drugs.

There is always a point in the week where "I...Run just as fast as I can" to listen to this song, as it is a song that resonates highly with the audience. For some, the song resonates with them as they have had similar experiences, whereas for others it is simply just a song of their choosing. "I swear you're just like a pill" because of how catchy this song is, and how it is a song that always leaves the audience member wanting to listen to more.

Would I recommend this artist/song?

Pink is artist that I always go back to. Whenever anyone asks my favourite song or favourite artist my mind draws a blank, because I can't choose a favourite, much less have a favourite. However if I was asked atleast one of my favourites Pink would definitely be within the mix. Her music both earlier stuff and recent stuff are for a desired person but I would highly recommend Pink. Her songs are extremely deep and meaningful additionally they are a healthy mix of fast paced and slow paced songs and almost every song of hers, is a highly energetic dancey tune.

Would I recommend this song in particular? Yes. Who knows, after listening to this if you aren't already a fan, you could be.

MUSIC VIDEO REVIEW - LET YOU LOVE ME BY RITA ORA

Feel like dancing? Like a little bit of RnB action? Or simply just want a decent tune, that is played fairly often on the the daily radio stations? Then Rita Ora has all of that!

Rita Ora, British singer, songwriter and actress. Known mainly for debut singles such as "R.I.P", "Hot Right Now", "How Do We Party" and "Shine Ya Light".  Additionally known for her recurring role on the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy as "Mia Grey".

The 27 year old, RnB, more recently expanding into the pop genre as well, has welcomed a new debut single "Let You Love Me". This track reflects the insecurities that she is feeling, which are causing problems within a relationship. Essentially, these insecurities are pushing her away from her partner, meaning that she is not letting him love her when that is what she really wants from him. However it is still unclear to fans on whether the song is from a personal experience or written on behalf of someone else's experience. Another way that this song can be perceived is the song, depicts a self-destructive relationship, singing over a set of  programmed drums and a group of atmospheric synths.

As a whole this song has arguably annoying classic pop conventions, with it's under laying beat however still initiates the typical Ora RnB sound. It is a memorable, catchy yet extremely dancey song, that includes a fast start and a averagely abrupt end. "I wish that I could"  express how much this song makes an audience member want to dance. For a RnB fan, this song would most likely be up their ally.

The music video for this tune, is a narrative perspective which Ora herself is playing the female protagonist, making her relatable to her audience and to the watcher; as they get to see what Ora looks like. Her style. As well as getting to feel connected with her as they are given someone to watch who they recognise.

In relation to mise-en-scene, there are primarily 3 locations used, with a couple of sub locations within 1 main location. This keeps the audiences attention, as the audience aren't fixating on one location, which after a short time could get boring for the audience to watch. Moreover the colours used within this video are muted, dark colours to fit with the theme of 'house party'. The lighting is averagely bright, so that the video can be seen by the audience however the light used is colour filtered so, that it fits with the mood of the song.

Parallel editing, can arguably be seen within the beginning of the video as strategically when the camera switches from Rita Ora to the male protagonist both locations, are circular making it feel like a seamless transition as it doesn't alter much. Apart from in terms of texture and character that the audience sees. Furthermore, product placement. It is worth noting that within this video, product placement has been used to create a personal relationship with certain audience members. Synergy. The media term for product placement, has been used by Ora, to expand the personal connection that she has to fans by introducing the use of Virtual Reality (VR) within the video. This deepens the connection with the audience, as they may feel drawn to this one detail. However it is also a way of marketing the product to her audience, thus creating the synergy; as an audience member may be intrigued enough to either buy the product or atleast research more in to it.

Finally, relating to Mise-en-scene Rita Ora's style stays the same throughout the video. From start to finish, Ora is wearing a plain white cropped top showing off her defined body, a pair of washed out blue denim, baggy, ripped jeans with a pair of black ankle high boots and a black mesh sleeved jacket. This can be relatable to the audience, as Ora's style is the depiction of her music genre as well as who she is as a person. Additionally, an audience member may be specifically drawn to her style, making it relatable and personal to the audience for several reasons; one being that they share the same or similar style. Moreover, her outfit can be seen through the use of the different shot variations but, the shot sequence in particular sticks to 3 main types of shots. Close ups, so that the audience can feel personally connected as they are able to see in more detail things like facial expression. Mid shots, so that the audience get some insight into the surroundings of the protagonists and lastly long shots, so that the audience can see more of the background and can get a feel for locations.

MUSIC VIDEO REVIEW - The Strays by Sleeping With Sirens

Hood caps”, “Ash trays” and a swarm of fans around the picturesque city of Manchester, UK. Sleeping With Sirens (SWS) music video for ‘The Strays’ features all of the above and more.

Starting out with a birds-eye view of a car junk yard, shortly followed by a close up of a young woman’s face, additionally showing off a lens glare from the camera, showing its authenticity and enhancing the viewers interest. ‘The Strays’ portrays different locations around Manchester, UK.

Sleeping With Sirens, a 5 piece American rock band from Orlando, Florida filmed the music video for ‘The Strays’ in Manchester, UK on the same day as one of their headlined shows. Using an assortment of willing fans from outside the venue, the band traveled around the city to capture different shots.

Aesthetically pleasing to the Mancunian fans, there’s a range of tracking shots for example a tracking shot of a flock of pigeons flying off, and tracking fans running. It is particularly a effective type of shot to use because it enhances the viewers attention, to the video because they feel as though they are part of the video. Additional to this, using a mid shot of fans running past the camera makes, the audience member feel as though the camera is their eyes, whilst they’re hidden behind an object. Moreover, using fans in the video, has a huge significance to the song, as the song is voicing to the fanbase that as a community, fans are one. They are there for one another and everyone may be unique but they are, all collectively strong.

As a whole this music video is more narrative based rather than performance based, however with the fans do get to see performance in the final third of the video, where the audience watches the audience and the band prepare for essentially what can be seen as a live performance. It is a common convention of rock bands, and bands in general to do performance shots with instruments because it gives new audience members a sense of who they are and how they play. Additionally it helps fans in general relate to the video in a nostalgic way as the audience member may have seen them perform live, so it makes it a more enjoyable experience, being sentimental to when they saw them.

On occasion the different shots, cut to beat which also enhances the audience members attention as they can more often than not feel comfortable watching the video; because it sticks to the motion of the audio. Finally one last thing to note about this video in particular is it reuses the shot it begins with. However uses it in a reverse motion so instead of a track forward, it tracks backwards. This gives a sense of a story like motion, as the shot has been repeated and it is almost as if you have watched a memory or a future event, by repeating the shot the audience feel like they have gone back to the beginning before, it all happened.

We are the strays”, insinuates Sleeping With Sirens. For the fanbase of SWS, “we” for sure are “the strays”, “we” are a strong fanbase and this video really enhances that for the fans of Sleeping With Sirens.

TRACK OF THE WEEK - Die From A Broken Heart - MADDIE & TAE

'Die From A Broken Heart'…A country song traditional to its genre in sound is a melodic song, “black mascara off a pillowcase” may be some of the audience’s reactions to this song as it is a tearfully emotional song.

Maddie Marlow and Taylor Dye, better known as country singing duo Maddie and Tae, recently released a new debut single ‘Die From A Broken Heart’.

This rather catchy, almost balladesque song is a calming alternative to the usual country twang. With it’s instrumental beginning and its instrumental end, the main focus is on the lyrics. “Mama the nerve” of the classic country music twang of the guitars, makes this song highly enjoyable to many fans of the genre. It’s calming undertone, makes it feel like the kind of song you’d have on your “sad playlist” for the days where you’re just not feeling the upbeat major scaled songs. That being said “my front door” is always open to country music, sometimes there is nothing like a country song, to “kick myself” into action for the day.

Would I recommend this artist/song?

If you are in to country, I would highly recommend listening to Maddie and Tae, there songs are highly enjoyable to listen to and for me there’s nothing like a good country song. As for this song, I do suggest at least giving it a listen to even if you’re not overally keen with country music because this song is a great alternative to slow songs.

MUSIC VIDEO REVIEW - TIMEBOMB BY ALL TIME LOW!

Timebomb metaphors, mechanic hearts, time, S.W.A.T teams and a lovable tune. Wondering how all of these fit together? Well each of these can be found in All Time Low’s music video 'Timebomb'.

All Time Low (ATL), a 4 piece American pop-punk/alternative-rock band, from Baltimore, Maryland. Signed to the independent record label Fueled by Ramen which is one of the sub labels owned by Warner Music Group. All Time Low’s discography consists of 5 EP’s, 7 studio albums and 2 Live Albums alongside 2 individual released singles.

'Timebomb'. A single off of the 'Dirty Work' album, released by major record label, Interscope. The music video for this song, shows a healthy mix of performance and narrative making it intriguing for the audience to watch as, they are kept entertained and are less likely to get bored since there is different things to pay attention to and not just a performance or narrative.

Essentially, when filming this music video it is highly likely that the band used playback to make the performance shots authentic and have it synced so that the video looks as professional as possible. A reason that bands use performance shots in videos is to make the audio and visual link with one another, and to add a unique and personal feeling to the video. This is because the audience like to know who is singing/playing especially if they’re not already a fan. It is also unique, because every band is different, and have individual styles which helps be relatable to the audience as All Time Low are considered “emo” especially with some of their earlier music; meaning that the audience members who also class as “emo” may feel more of an emotional and personal connection by seeing them.

There is a fairly even split, within this video of narrative scenes and performance scenes. One of the first narrative shots the audience see, is of a male protagonist making something, but it is unknown at first what it is as there is a wide shot angle, with the protagonists back facing the screen. It is only known to the audience what the protagonist is making, a couple of more shots in. Was there inspiration from Iron Man within the narrative? The Arc reactor (or Electromagnet) that is within the narrative, looks almost identical to the one within Marvel’s Iron Man. However it is essential to the video as the electromagnet is a metaphor for the female protagonists heart. “I’ve got your heart, in my hands” is what is visually represented by this mechanic creation made the male protagonist.

The shot variation, range from close ups of the band members and the instruments, to close ups of the protagonists facial reactions. Then there is a variation of wide shots, mid shots and long shots to portray different things like background or actions. For example their is a long shot of during the end of the narrative scenes where the protagonists, are running on a roof top in Los Angeles, California because it is portraying to the audience the background, the conditions like weather as well as the action, of them running away from what seems like the “bad guys” or rather “villains”. Supporting the idea of villains, the Character theory by Vladimir Propps (1986). Propps’ theory (1986) suggested that, there are 8 different character types which can be found within storyline’s. One of the fictional characters including the villain as well as a hero and a damsel in distress/princess.

Additionally, near the end of the video the camera shows the narrative happening parallel to the performance, by having the protagonists running on the adjacent roof top to the band. It is captured from the rooftop that the protagonists are running on, that the band are on the rooftop opposite/next to there’s. Moreover, it is also done from a camera on the rooftop of the band, so that the audience see it from both perspectives.

Finally, throughout the video when the shots change some of them cut to the beat of the drums which makes it feel seamless because it smoothly transitions into another scene.

Are you running out of time? Do you feel like time is like ticking like a timebomb? Have you seen the music video before? If not then go check out the music video for 'Timebomb'. It does not disappoint!

Do not know if you will like All Time Low? If you like bands like Fall Out Boy, Paramore, One Ok Rock, Blink-182, Neck Deep, Sleeping with Sirens and many more, then this band is most likely for you!

TRACK OF THE WEEK - "The Fire, The Dark" by As It Is

Ever held someone’s hand and it doesn’t feel the same? Well As It Is have a song all about it!

Hello Consumer,

Track of the week this week is ‘The Fire, The Dark’. A punk rock song that, is off a chokingly emotional, yet off an album worth listening to. “The Great Depression”. The newest debut album from As It Is.

This song, just like the other 11 tracks on the album, is a tune that a fan of As It Is, are highly drawn to. It is a instrumental driven song from he very beginning. It is a song that expresses “The Poet’s” struggles, whilst in the stage of denial. For many of the fans, this song resonates highly, as it is featured on an album that has the soul purpose of educating it’s audience on mental health. It is romanticising suicide and social stigma’s that the every day person faces in today’s society and has been done, in such a way as to, stress to the younger members of the fanbase that it is a pressing issue. Every life matters.

As tearful as this song can get, the beat is a enjoyable, foot tapping beat. It partly strays from the typical style from previous albums of As It Is’ however it can be defined as a healthy mix of all the albums, as there are elements from each, in terms of the sound. Alongside the obvious emotion through the lyrics in this song, it has been written in a form that speaks to the audience. The audience are getting “The Poet’s” story, through the song, the emotions that “The Poet” is going through, and the overall struggles that “The Poet” has to face. Furthermore, the memorable lyrics and beat are highly addictive and for a fan of As It Is or a fan of pop punk/punk rock, this song for sure would be a contender for the everyday playlist. It is a way of showing “me any escape”.

Would I personally recommend this song or artist?

To a fan of bands such as Sleeping With Sirens, Pierce The Veil, Green Day, State Champs etc, then yes I would. Personally As It Is are a personal favourite, they are four talented musicians who have a very devoted fanbase and incredible songs. For fans of pop rock or punk rock, I would also recommend giving this band a listen, because they are highly enjoyable, with a vast amount of slow songs and more upbeat, rather dancey tunes.

But would I recommend this song? For me this song, is my favourite song off of The Great Depression album, with that being said it is a song that for me instantly gets me moving and singing, so would that be why I recommend it? Possibly one of the reasons. But there is no definitive reason I can give for why you should or shouldn’t listen to this track.

As a fan of As It Is, I highly recommend, although I would suggest going to their older songs first before you venture into the new era that is The Great Depression, because this album is a little different from previous stuff, so if you’re a first time listener…go for ‘Dial Tones’, ‘Can’t Save Myself’, ‘My Oceans Were Lakes’ and go from there.

What’s next for As It Is? Well Consumer, I’m glad you asked.

Hello Consumer, welcome to the new era of As It Is, I hope you enjoy the new album and check out if they are coming to a city near you, real soon!

"When will the voices in my head, just stop and let me rest" - Against the Current 'Voices' Music Video

It is not all smoke and mirrors. Just primarily mirrors!

Against the Current’s music video for ‘Voices’ released 28th September 2018, hitting over 1 million views. It is based in 1 main location, a mansion or so it seems to the audience as throughout the video roughly 9 sub locations (I.e. rooms) are used. Using a vast range of natural light, the video has used mirrors to depict the lyrics of the song, “If I look in the mirror will I see through their eyes?

The ‘Voices’ music video is set in a modern style house, almost Victorian style although that is not certain as the audience are never shown the exterior. It can be assumed that it is this style as the windows are rather large and allow a lot of natural light in. This adds to the music video as it gives it a naturally lit vibe, instead of a synthetic lit vibe.

In the first 15 seconds of the video, Will Ferri and Dan Gow both stood either side of Chrissy Costanza, the camera focusing in on their legs only; they were jumping in and out of shot to the beat of the music to imply “the voices in my head”. This effect happens rather similarly throughout the video with the typography (text on screen) and with cartoon style drawings of circles and lines. Each circle and line as well as outlines was done using key framing so that it stayed in perfect sync with the pace of the music and each movement made.

Within this entire music video, there are a range of different shots like close ups and mid shots mixed with the odd long shot and wide shot because for the audience member, it is portraying a personal feel, making the audience member feel close to the members. Additionally this is also a way of interpretating the lyrics as the voices are up close and personal. Something that this video does throughout which is effective to the fact this song is a lot more rockesque, is cutting to the beat. Each of the shots cut to the beat which makes it more enjoyable for the audience, to watch as it feels seamless and syncronised with the music; enhancing the viewers attention as the shots keep the audience members intrigued. Moreover, Costanza’s spontaneous dancing sections to the beats of the music, fit nicely into the video as it gives a fun feel and a generally entertaining vibe to the song itself, because if Costanza can dance to the song then so can the fans. Additionally the dancing adds to the views enhancement of concentration because, it keeps it interesting to be watching and it doesn’t get boring to watch.

Finally near the end of the video, there are at least two shots that have the lens glare effect from the light, which gives the audience a personal feel as the member can feel as though they are there. It also gives off the illusion of bundles of light coming through the windows, beside the camera. It adds a natural filter to the shot without it being edited in.

Rockesque. Stylish. Entertaining. Fun. Those are just a few words that can be used to describe this music video, Costanza has admitted to fans that this music video is her favourite video of the 3 that have been released so far.

Your fears coming true and now you ask” what is next from Against the Current?

A new era, and one hell of a new adventure with Past Lives!

Does Olly Murs have 'Moves' ?

From being taught how to dance, to “making them blushOlly Murs takes “confidence in myself” to a whole new level.

This overly catchy yet rather repetitive pop song song is a typical Murs tune, with an arguably enjoyable beat that sticks with the same chord progressions that Murs has done previously. What makes this song different? Honestly, nothing. Even with the addition of Snoop Dogg, nothing changes the typical Murs sound that we are use to hearing. Although this song lacks finesse, it can be questioned that it is one hell of a chart topper.

Olly Murs, 34 year old, British Pop singer previous to his recent debut single release, has announced his new album “You Know I Know”. It has been 2 years since Murs has released an album, this new album is set to release 9th November 2018, 14 new tracks plus a bonus disc of Murs’ biggest singles. On the greatest collection track list, there are hits like ‘Dance With Me Tonight’, ‘Troublemaker’, ‘Dear Darlin’ ‘, ‘Up’ and many more. Overall this album, has a total of 28 tracks, 14 per disc. Murs told Smooth radio in an interview that his new debut single ‘Moves’ ft Snoop Dogg “fits my cheekiness, my persona, my vibe.”. With this track, although it fits within the typical Murs repertoire, it is a more mature version of who Murs is now, compared to when he first started his career.

Snoop Dogg, 46 year old, American rapper born as Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr, got his nickname ‘Snoop Dogg’ from his mother because she thought he looked like Snoopy from the Peanuts cartoon. He began making music as a way of getting out of his troubled past. A few years into his career, Snoop Dogg began to branch out, and take up acting and become a reality star. He has been in several films including “Training Day” and “Starsky & Hutch”.

This typical pop song, is the type of song that can be expected to “hit the bar” on a Friday night down at the local night clubs, where they play the classic pop songs. Snoop Dogg, although questionable to if he adds anything to this song, his parts in the song seem misplaced and don’t exactly stick out in the track. It is almost as if someone has just said to Murs that he should add something new, and created a collaboration out of thin air. On the other hand, Snoop Dogg, makes this song a touch more bearable to listen to as it is, a rich beat and the kind of song that a true Murs fan could dance to.

Exactly, 1 month until the new album Murs’ is set to release. If ‘Moves’ is an insight to this new album, fans can expect a classic Olly Murs tune, with a more mature twist. It would seem like within the last 2 years, Murs has grown as a man and has portrayed that through the music on this album. 28 tracks, 14 songs that fans know very well, 13 songs that fans know nothing about and 1 song that fans seem to be enjoying. Just ask the radio stations, it’s played on repeat on BBC Radio 1 amongst other very reputable radio station.

TRACK OF THE WEEK - 'I Wish You Were Here' by HRVY!

Track of the week is something new that is going to be started as a weekly occurrence! This weeks track of the week, is 'I Wish You Were Here' by HRVY.

HRVY, formally known as Harvey Cantwell is a 19 year old, British, pop musician signed with Alphadog Management and known for songs like ‘Personal’, ‘Talk To Ya’ and ‘Holiday’. Its no secret that, HRVY has been around for a couple of years, but through 2018 HRVY rose through the ranks. With millions of fans around the world, and his rather infectious pop tunes he has built up tonnes of views on YouTube.

From the simplicity of singing videos on Facebook, to touring the world with The Vamps. HRVY has really been getting his name out there, with his music; especially being able to collaborate with acts like Redfoo, Stylo G and Sigala on tracks. With influences like The Vamps and New Hope Club, HRVY has begun to get himself bigger and bigger, and getting the chance to have his newest debut release ‘I Wish You Were Here’ on Capital FM.

I Wish You Were Here’ is a highly energetic, dance ridden song. “Let me make it clear” that the audience member has no chance of not dancing, whilst listening to this song because of the repetitive drum beat, and the enjoyable rhythm. This song is the song that you can’t help but want to listen to, “I wish you were here” to listen to this and see how catchy this song really is. Although this song is highly enjoyable to the fans of HRVY and fans of pop music in general, this song is an extremely repetitive song and could potentially get old after a while, if the audience member overly listens. However, in no way is the fact this song is repetitive a reason to not like it, it is still a very fast paced, high beat song that regardless of its repetitiveness is still enjoyable, like most other pop songs.

Would I personally recommend this song or this artist?

Yes. Yes I would. HRVY is a very talented young artist, who has a lot of fun pop tunes to listen to and he is getting bigger and more well known. Which gives the implication that if you’re into pop music, he is more than worth the listen. Sure, primarily his audience are a young, female orientated audience, who like to scream in higher decibels than anyone’s ears should ever have to deal with, but his talent alone shows that he is a rising artist, worthy of growing his audience. Especially now with the influence of The Vamps on tour and New Hope Club, who were arguably in the exact same boat as HRVY is now, they grew bigger within a matter of months, thanks to The Vamps and now so will HRVY.

Bronnie Hughes - EP3!

Local Wirral, punk rock, female musician Bronnie Hughes has released a new EP ‘Erase Me’. This is Bronnie’s 3rd debut EP, a 4 track album that has a bit of everything for all her fans. Tracks that are faster and high in beat such as 'Total Outcasts' and 'Fake it', to a slightly slower more mellow song such as 'Erase Me', landing 'Strange Tattoo' as a healthy in between. Rocking up in the charts at overall #2 for the EP in the UK, Bronnie has nothing but overwhelming love for her devoted fans.

'Total Outcasts', a song that all the “geeks, freaks” and “kids in the dark” should listen to. It instantly gives a nostalgic feel to Bronnie’s other 2 EPs where her genre really shines through. It is a highly rhythmic song, that “every single freaking night” since it has been out, its been played. It is one of those songs that the listener just can’t help but dance to, because this song has a rather heavy drum backing, paired with a strong sense of electric guitar and something especially likable about this song is its build up in the introduction. People may “think we are strange” for falling in love with this EP but it is a highly enjoyable album that makes the audience want to dance. “You think we’re lame” but “we know we could runaway” from other people’s opinions because as a fandom we have an inspirational woman leading us.

'Strange Tattoo', which is not as strange as some may assume is a healthy in between song to listen to. It is not too fast like Total Outcasts is, but it is also not as slow as the song after it called Erase Me.After hours” of listening to the song repeatedly “I can never get enough” of it. Overall this song is a vastly catchy, dancey song with a fairly high rhythmic feel and a highly enjoyable key change in the final quatre of the song, which keeps the audiences attention as it gives them something new to listen to.

'Erase Me'. This song is the slowest song on the EP, with it still having the element of punk rock in it. This song however has more of a rockesque feel to it, and “I know it’s time” to admit that this is an extremely catchy, and a more emotional song on the album. “Please erase” the fact that this song has only been in the hands of the fans for 2 days, and it is already one of the fan favourites. Additional to the fact this song is slow, it is also 1 of 2 songs that is on this album, that is explicit.

Finally, 'Fake It'. This song has “changed the attitude of the world” with its underlining rhythmic beat and its explicit words. Not only is it the other explicit song on the album, this song is also the only other song on the album to switch key just before the final chorus is sung. Which again, like Strange Tattoo makes it largely enjoyable to listen to because it keeps the audience drawn into the end of the song. It’s a song that the audience can’t help but dance to in some way, and many of her fans feel like “she’s a rebel now” after releasing this EP, because it is by far a fan favourite.

One last thing to note about this EP is it’s cover art. Now, it is no secret to fans of Bronnie especially not hardcore fans of Bronnie who have been here since day one, that her album covers are made by her. This EP cover like her last, was drawn up by her giving it a more personal edge to it. It is also a more girly take to the cover, which is unlike her previous two, with the light pink coloured titles to help the drawing stand out a bit, and also to add a bit of colour to the sleeve. Moreover, the hypnotic pattern surrounding the drawing of the alienesque girl, is something that draws the audience in because it stands out from other covers, especially with the black and white elements.

'Past Lives' - Against the Current

Friday 28th September, the New York - trio, Against the Current (ATC) welcomes their 2nd full album 'Past Lives'. Taking the world by storm, Against the Current hit the alternative charts within mere hours of the release. Overall Past Lives was #12 on the overall itunes charts, rocking up at #3 in the alternative rock charts. 'Past Lives' is an 11 track album, with a range of fast upbeat songs, and slower balladesque songs.

Many fans heard the album a couple of hours previous to the official release, due to Billboards live listen to. The band took to twitter, sharing the link whilst additionally sharing an article that had been written about the album. Chrissy Costanza (Lead Vocals/Front-woman) also did a Q&A with billboard about a few things relating to the new album. Costanza spoke about how the each song initially came about, personally for her, saying "it felt like I had cataloged all of these different moments in my head over the years and was waiting to revisit them. Opening them up was like being transported back into that moment. It was so vivid it was terrifying."  The 23 year old singer, then went on to explain the influence behind moving away from the comfort of their pop punk phase, to test out a more electronic and pop vibed tendency, the singer explained "We’re all big fans of pop music; this is definitely the direction we’ve always wanted to head in. On this record, we were finally fearless and shed our skin. We wanted to create music that reflected our personalities now and also who we wanted to be."

Something that is interesting about this album, compared to anything that ATC have done before, is that they tested themselves in ways they haven't before, for example by using falsetto in a song or two, to really enhance the notes and to give it a slightly different feel, to the music they are use to producing. This album has something for every fan. If you're wanting a faster paced song, something that will for sure get you dancing and singing along this album has some groovy tunes, straight up your street. If you're looking for a classic ATC rock style song then 'Voices' is the one to head towards. Finally, but certainly not least if you are simply wanting a slower paced, balladesque song to listen to, maybe a slightly more emotional song or simply just a song that is raw and calming, this album has elements like this as well.

It is undeniable that this album is a success with the fans already, its presence in the last 24 hours has left fans uncontrollably listening to it over and over again. Am I one? Yes, yes I am. I cannot get enough of this album! I'm definitely enjoying the EDM style that they have gone for with this album, it is something very enjoyable to listen to and something that is not going to get "old" very fast because it's so relevant to the audience.

TITLED ALBUM TRACKS;

1. Strangers Again
2. The Fuss
3. I Like The Way
4. Personal
5. Voices
6. Scream
7. Almost Forgot
8. P.A.T.T.
9. Friendly Reminder
10. Come Alive
11. Sweet Surrender

Strangers Again, was one of the first songs that the fans heard from the new album. When it was released, fans went wild over it because it was a newer sound to listen to and was not what many people expected to hear for this album. Nevertheless "I don't wanna go through the motions" of not having this song played atleast once a day, because it is a song that resonates with a lot of the audience and broader audience as well as overall being a dance induced song. With its moderately paced, electronic feel behind it, fans are left wondering "how did I get here" because from day one, with this song fans, were begging for more. One thing to note about this song is, even though its verses are moderately paced, the chorus is a lot more fast paced and is a rather fun track to listen to. Its safe for fans to say "now i'm over that" stage of waiting for new music after the release of not just one but four songs on the album, fans couldn't wait for more. One last thing to say about this song is that the first 12 seconds of the song is all instrumental before Costanza starts singing, then the final 20 seconds or so of the song is purely instrumental as well which is something that a lot of, ATC's songs have.

The Fuss, was a newer song that fans had heard about from Costanza on twitter but were eager to hear. this electronicesque rock song is more than extremely catchy and you're left wondering "whats the fuss about", but the fuss is about how catchy this song actually is. This song is one of the first songs you hear on the album, so it sets the tone for the rest of the songs and although the song is rather repetitive, there is no way it doesn't make you dance in some way. It is not an annoyingly repetitive song, but you can hear it within the song. But sometimes that's what makes songs rather enjoyable, as you know most of the lyrics already. In no way, is the fact this song is repetitive, make it a song not to listen to. There is not a single song on this album that personally I wouldn't recommend to someone. Additionally to The Fuss, the 3rd titled track I Like The Way, is an instantly dancey song. It is the more popesque song on the album but "I like the way" that it sounds because it is a faster paced song and one that you can get into straight away from the first guitar string strum, to the last drum strike. Another thing to say about this song, is that it is a rhythmic song, so if you're into pop songs then this song is for you. It isn't overally pop, but it might be kidding myself if I didn't state that every pop song in some way, sound like another.

Next, we have Personal. Now this song had me from day one. When it was released this song, you could instantly tell from the first listen that it was going to be an emotional song. "Maybe I can let go" of all my emotions with this song because, there still isn't a single time that this song doesn't make me tear up. This song out of them all, is the emotional, raw, and powerful balladesque song. However I feel like this song is more emotional to fans, as Costanza told everyone who it was written to. This song was written in remembrance of her late best friend Julius Trombino. There is just something about this song that gets you hooked, "I took it personal" because it is such a moderately slow paced song that still has the typical ATC style to it, giving hints of songs from the previous album like 'Demons' and 'Roses'. Now, Voices. This song is the ATC traditional sounding rock song. It is a mix of electronic style and rock however this song is that one song that when you hear it live, if you're not dancing then what are you doing. Listening to this song, "my heads chained down" from the slight The 1975 feel but with having a "war again" in your head this song resonates with a lot of the audience of ATC as many of them can relate to having "voices in my head" so this song, is one that the broader audience can really get in to and have a personal attachment to. I just "can't take" how the overall rock vibe of the song, pins down a classic ATC sound.

Scream, is the head bopping, foot tapping song. Listening to this song is "torture" because it makes me "scream" at how different this song is, to what the trio have done before. It is catchy, there is no denying that but this song also has a sense of falsetto within it during the chorus, but also stands out from the rest of the songs because it is more of an abrupt start and abrupt end than other songs on the album. Almost Forgot. This song is one of two explicit songs on the album, it is extremely catchy and its moderate pace is what hooks in the audience. It is "breaking my heart" that this song speaks a lot of peoples emotions including the dynamic trios. "You're still effecting my mood" over how this song was one of the first songs to be released and it gave fans a massive insight to the sound, which is largely different with this album, but not in a bad way. The band went from a heavy pop-punk, alternative style album to a more electronic, pop.

When releasing Almost Forgot it was almost as if they were testing the waters for their other songs, as Almost Forgot was released first, then came Strangers Again, then Personal and then just over a week before the album was set to release, Voices was released so it was almost like we were, getting 4 different songs to get a feel for the new album.

P.A.T.T. is not obvious to most at first, but is an acronym. The song titles stands for Pretty All The Time and is a heavily led female narrative song. "If love is blind" then why do fans love this song so much. This song is probably the one song on the entire album that every female fan can resonate with, there will be some of the male audience that can resonate to it in some way as well however, the female narrative driven song, suggests the target audience was most likely to be the teen girls of the audience. "Girls" this song is a catchy, repetitive and extremely dance worthy song that you can't help but fall in love with and is a very upbeat song with a faster pace behind it. Friendly Reminder, is another head bopping song on the album but it also a very catchy chorused song, "hey, hey" did you know that this song has a slower paced verse, then a faster paced chorus its almost as if it builds throughout the verse until it gets to the chorus, and this is a "friendly reminder" that this album is a electronicesque pop album and this song is definitely the song that gives this away.

Come Alive, is a repetitive yet catchy song that is groovy and dancey. It additionally is the other song on the album that is explicit so it stands out from the rest of the songs, it has a moderately slow pace but "I want to come alive" when I hear this song because it makes you want to sway and nod your head to the beat of the drum. Now finally, Sweet Surrender. Sweet Surrender is like one of those songs that was written to say the words that can't be said or that can be said but not out loud. Its catchy and balladesque, and "called out my name" as if fans were meant to hear this song, and with it being the last song on the album it is like the ending but I "cry out for help" because like all the other songs I cannot get enough of this song, its like I "kept choosing the rain" because this song draws in the audience as it is so relatable to a lot of the audience and it keeps you in a "free fall".

Finally, the album cover. Now it is not a secret to the fans that the album cover is a mashup of Against the Current members eyes, it is metaphorical of the album title and the songs themselves. From left to right, we have Dan Gow, Chrissy Costanza and Will Ferri. Many fans will look at this in a different way, however looking at the title being "Past Lives" it can be insinuated that the album cover is eyes because we are getting an insight into past memories, memories that are remembered from a different time, a more difficult time, and this can definitely be proved through songs like Personal and Almost Forgot.
